Abstract:
The Government agencies, businesses and every other sector of our society benefit from innovations in Geospatial science and technology. Academics and entrepreneurs have found a variety of creative ways to use Geospatial science to advance science and societal well being. The latest technology developments make way for new applications and for the convergence of geospatial technology with other emerging tools. The evolution of geospatial science and technology is far from over, with exciting new technology, software and methods continuing to change the way researchers utilize this technology. In this talk, Dr. Panda will discuss the recent advances in geospatial data science and its application in the area of natural resources and present a few case studies highlighting its applications in Alaska. Bio of Speaker: Dr. Santosh Panda is an Associate Professor of Geographic Information Science in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment at University of Alaska Fairbanks. He teaches upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in remote sensing and GIS. His research focuses on advancing the application of geospatial science and technology to improve scientific understanding of Arctic landscape change and related geo-hazards in Alaska such as changes due to large forest fires, thawing permafrost, and eroding riverbanks with an ultimate goal to serve various stakeholders and influence policy decisions in support of sustainable solutions to emerging environmental problems.
