The Automation Cell at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela, established in 2014 as a Technical Service Unit, has been dedicated to developing and managing the institute's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The cell has been upgraded to Centre for Automation Technology (CAT) in 2023. The centre is responsible for digital presence of NIT Rourkela. The centre manages the institute website and caters to the need for software solutions and maintenance for various academic, co-academic, and non-academic activities of the Institute.
The centre leverages cutting-edge automation technologies not only to provide solutions to NIT Rourkela but to offer consultancy services to other organizations requiring software solutions. Besides this, CAT officers regularly train officers of other government and private-sector organizations in the domain of web programming, artificial intelligence, and app development.

- Supporting MSMEs in setting up online presence: Assisting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in establishing their online presence through website and app development.
- Training officers of Government and private sectors: Providing comprehensive training programs for officers to enhance their technical skills and knowledge in automation technologies including web programming, artificial intelligence, app development etc.
