NIT Rourkela is one of the institutes of national importance under Ministry of Education, Government of India. Government of India has elevated the Regional Engineering College, Rourkela to an autonomous institution under the name of National Institute of Technology, Rourkela.
The main objective of the Institute is to produce quality Engineers and Scientists in Graduate and Post-Graduate levels in various branches of Engineering and Science. The Institute is managed by the Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology (Rourkela) Society and vested with significant degree of administrative and financial autonomy. Government of India have recognized the Institute as a premier institution of repute and have developed it as a center of excellence under plan funding. The Institute has been modernized by two foreign collaborative funding agencies i.e. the Material theme in the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering department under Indo-U.K. REC project and the Computer Science and Electronics streams under World Bank cum Swiss Development Corporation IMPACT project.
The campus of the Institute consisting of the Institute buildings, halls of residence and staff colony is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 262 hectares of land provided by the Government of Orissa. It is a residential campus offering accommodation to faculty, staff and students. The campus has all the amenities for developing personal, social and academic skills of the student community.
The city of Rourkela came into prominence in the year 1954-55, with the decision of the Government of India to set up the first Public Sector Steel Plant in this locality in collaboration with the then West Germany. The city is a huge metropolis connected with all parts of the country by railway and road. The population of the city is about 6 lakhs.
Admission to all B.Tech, B.Arch. courses are made through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE(Main)). The counseling for this is done by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Additionally the Institute offers integrated M.Sc and M.Tech degree which are of 5 years duration. Admission to 5 years integrated programs are made from JEE(Main) or similar National level test, along with the admission for B.Tech and B.Arch.
The Institute offers Degree of Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science (M.Sc) and Master of Arts (MA) in selective deprtments. All the postgraduate programs are of 2 years (4 semester) duration. The minimum qualification required for the admission to M.Tech program is B.E / B.Tech / M.Sc in relevant subject. Candidates having valid GATE card will get more preference. To be eligible for admission to the M. Sc courses a student must have passed B.Sc. with the proposed specialization as relevant subject. The M.Tech/M.Plan admission is through Centralised Counselling for M.Tech/M.Plan (CCMT). For MBA the admission is through any of the National Entrance Tests like CAT,MAT,CMAT,XAT etc.
The institute offers various research centric courses in various departments/ Centers like Post Doc, PhD, M.Tech research under various schemes with fellowship and sponsored programs like QIP and self financed.
Post-Doc Fellowship (Post-Doc)
A number of post-doctoral fellowships are available at various departments. Candidates ordinarily below the age of 40 years and having a doctorate degree are eligible to apply for the fellowship. The fellowships will be as per the norms set by MHRD or AICTE/DST/CSIR OR UGC.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
All departments and centers offer Ph. D. program. The Minimum criteria required for the admission to the program are given below.
- M.E/M.Tech/M.Pharm in relevant discipline with at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks in aggregate in both B.Tech (or M.Sc./M.Pharm/MCA) and M.Tech levels from recognized technical Institute or University.
- B.E/B.Tech/B.Pharm/MCA or equivalent in relevant discipline with 7.0 CGPA or 65% marks in aggregate.
- M.Sc in Basic Sciences with 7.0 CGPA or 65% marks in aggregate in relevant disciplines.
- M.B.B.S with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks in aggregate.
- M.Sc./M.A/MBA/M.Com. in Humanities and Social Sciences or Management with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks.
Candidates having valid NET/GATE score rd along with these criteria will get more preference.
M.Tech(Research)
A few departments like … offer M.Tech by research. This course don’t have a time bound and the course work will be decided by the Masters Scrutiny Committee (MSC). This course requires a submission of original research in form of a thesis..The minimum qualification required for admission to the program is one of the following.
- B.E/B.Tech/B.Pharm/MCA or equivalent in relevant discipline with 7.0 CGPA or 65% marks in aggregate.
- M.Sc in Basic Sciences with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks in aggregate in relevant disciplines.
- M.B.B.S with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks in aggregate.
- M.Sc./M.A/MBA/M.Com. in Humanities and Social Sciences or Management with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks.
Quality Improvement Programme(QIP)
Few programs are supported. The program covers education of college teachers for M.Tech and Ph.D degrees. The studentship program under the QIP will be administrated as per AICTE rules.
