Faculty Profile

BIOGRAPHY

Prof. Jagabandhu Panda received his B. Sc. Physics (Hons) and M. Sc. (Physics) degrees from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He subsequently moved to the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi to pursue Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences after qualifying GATE. He started his research journey by working on Atmospheric Boundary Layer characteristics. He is one of the researchers to start implementing the Advanced Research WRF modeling system in the Indian region. After completing his Ph.D., he worked at TransWeb Educational Services, India Meteorological Department (New Delhi), and National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF, Noida), before joining Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore as a post-doctoral researcher. Thereafter, he worked at Academia Sinica for a few months as a post-doc before joining NIT Rourkela. He used the WRF modeling system extensively for his research works during both his Ph.D. as well as post-PhD tenures. As an accomplished researcher, he focuses on extreme/high-impact weather events, regional-scale weather and climate studies, urban meteorology and climatology, aerosol-climate interaction, planetary atmospheres of Mars and Venus, and applications of numerical modeling, data assimilation techniques, RS and GIS techniques, and ML/DL algorithms in atmospheric studies. He is one of the distinct researchers, who works on tropical cyclone climatology and published several research papers on this topic in international journals, significantly contributing to the scientific understanding in this direction, especially for the North Indian Ocean region. His contribution to the research on urbanization and its effects, and aerosol-cloud interaction has been quite prominent and significant. He is one of the few Indian researchers, who contributed appreciably to the scientific understanding of Mars Atmosphere too.
