Syllabus

Course Prerequisite: UG Level course on Building Materials and Concrete Technology

Module I: Concrete as Construction Material & Concrete Making Materials (8 hours)
Constituent materials, Cement production, composition, and classifications, Supplementary cementing materials, Microstructure of cement hydrates, Aggregate classifications, Alkali Aggregate reactions, Mineral Admixtures and classifications, Chemical admixtures and classifications, working mechanisms of admixtures.

Module II: Properties of Fresh and Hardened Concrete (8 hours)
Production of concrete, Ready mix concrete, Pumping of concrete, Steps of concreting, Fresh concrete, workability and its measure, Mechanical and elastic properties of concrete, Mix design of concrete, Factors affecting the properties of concrete, Shrinkage and creep, Durability of concrete and its measurement

Module III: Special Concretes (6 hours)
Properties and Advantages of High Strength and High-Performance Concrete, Properties and Applications of Fibre Reinforced Concrete, Self-Compacting Concrete, Alternate Concrete materials on high performance and High Strength.

Module IV: Metals (6 hours)
Types of Steel, The Manufacturing Process of Steel, Advantages of New Alloy Steel, Properties and Advantages of Aluminum and Its Products, Types of Coatings and Coatings to Reinforcement, Applications of Coatings.

Module V: Composites (8 hours)
Types of Plastics, Properties & Manufacturing process, Advantages of Reinforced polymers, Types of F.R.P., F.R.P. on different structural elements, Applications of F.R.P., Types and properties of Water Proofing Compounds, Non-weathering Materials, Flooring, and Facade Materials and their uses, Types and Differences between Smart and Intelligent Materials, Case studies showing the applications of smart & Intelligent Materials.

Course Objectives

  • To understand the function and effects of cement, aggregate, and admixture in concrete and their properties
  • To understand concrete as a material and its properties.
  • To understand the norms and their basis in codes for mix design and quality assessment of concrete and its constituents.
  • To study and understand the properties of modern construction materials such as special concretes, metals, composites, water-proofing compounds, non-weathering materials, and smart materials

Course Outcomes

CO1: It will help students understand the basic principles of concrete science and engineering.
CO2: The students will learn about mix design, the assessment process of concrete quality, common concrete issues, and the possible mitigation methodologies in the field as an engineer.
CO3: The students will learn about the preparation and utilization of high-performance concrete in construction.
CO4: The students will be able to efficiently identify the utilization of various metals in the construction field.
CO5: The students will be able to apply their knowledge of polymer composites, different flooring materials, façade materials, and smart materials in construction.
