Syllabus

Basic concepts of bio-separation process, Filtration: Filtration at constant pressure and at constant rate, batch and continuous filtration, centrifugal and cross-flow filtration, Centrifugation: principles and design parameters, Ultra centrifugation, Liquid-liquid extraction, Precipitation: Salting out and solvent precipitation, Chromatographic separation: size exclusion chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography, Paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), 1D and 2D Electrophoresis, Micro-filtration, Osmosis and reverse osmosis, Dialysis, Distillation, Crystallization.

Course Objectives

  • To learn about various types of separation techniques for the isolation and purification of biologically important products.

Course Outcomes

1. Students will be able to learn about various types of separation techniques for the isolation and purification of biologically important products in industrial scale. <br />2. Students will be able to apply the principles of major bioseparation operations used in a bioprocess industry such as filtration, centrifugation, extraction and chromatography, precipitation, coagulation and flocculation. <br />3. Students will be able to design the bio-separation process units in the industrial level. <br />4. Students will be able to do engineering analysis and troubleshooting for bioseparation unit.. <br />5. Students will be able to estimate scale-up calculations for bioseparation equipment.
