Syllabus

Module I
Alternative bricks and blockworks and panel constructions: classification of bricks and blockworks into burnt bricks, chemically treated bricks, cement stabilized blocks, Fly ash blocks, concrete blocks etc. and other unconventional and eco-friendly blocks, Panel construction systems advocated by BMTPC
Module II
Advanced concretes and binders: lightweight concretes, polymer reinforced concretes, ultra-high-performance concrete, concrete canvas, visual concrete, pre-stressed concretes, insulated concrete formwork, EPS core panel system and shotcrete, micro concrete, ferro-cement, binders and mortars- cement, lime and alternatives, green cements and green concretes
Module III
Asphalt and bituminous products: difference between asphalt, bitumen and asphalt concrete properties and forms of asphalt and bituminous products
Module IV
Plastics and polymers: General properties of plastics, polymerization, fillers and plasticizers, molding and fabricating methods for plastics, thermosetting plastics, thermoplastics resins, elastomers or synthetic rubbers, combination of plastic and other materials.
Module V
Glass- sheet and non-sheet products: types of glass, manufacturing process of float glass, classification of glass products into non-sheet and sheet products, property and utility of sheet and non-sheet glass products, glass fibre reinforced products, fire resistant glass, glass assembly for energy efficient window design
Module VI
Metals in architecture: properties of metals, corrosion of metals, metal application in architecture, metal installation temperature, heat treatment of metals, metals used in building constructions- steel, aluminium, copper, tin and other relevant metals and alloys, specific uses of each metal and its alloy in construction sector
Module VII
Composite materials: composite classification- microscopic and macroscopic composites, ecological and recycled composite materials
Module VIII
Application of building materials: emerging concept of ‘materiality’ in buildings, case studies and exercises

Course Objectives

  • To learn about the properties of contemporary building materials used in building design
  • To be able to use these materials in professional practice

Course Outcomes

Ability to understand in deeper level utility and alternative forms of basic building materials such as brick, concrete, steel etc. <br />Ability to understand various types of materials used in various building components <br />Ability to understand the utility and aesthetics of application of building materials in building projects
