Syllabus

Principles of machine tools: Kinematics of machine tools, speed transmission from motor to spindle, Speed reversal mechanism, Tool holding and job holding methods in different M/C tools, Types of surfaces generated, Indexing mechanism and thread cutting mechanism. Concepts of Aesthetic and Ergonomics applied to machine tools, Acceptance tests and Standardization of machine tools, Machine tool reconditioning. Latest trends in machine tool design Non-Conventional metal removal process: Electro Discharge Machining, Laser Beam, Plasma Arc, Ion Beam, Electro Chemical, Abrasive jet, Ultrasonic and water jet-machining. Numerical control: Brief principles and description of numerical control application to M/C tools. DNC, CNC and adaptive control. Programming of CNC M/C tools, CNC programming based on CAD. Fundamentals of CAD/CAM, Computer integrated manufacturing, Compute Aided Process Planning, Computer Integrated Production Planning system. Flexible Manufacturing Systems: types, Benefits and Elements of FMS Applications of FMS. Robotics: Definition, Types and programming of Robots, Application of Industrial robots.

Course Objectives

  • To learn about the material removal processes
  • To learn and understand about the advances in machining process and the effect of various parameters affecting the performance of workpiece
  • To learn about the machine tools (both traditional and non-traditional machining) and their operations
  • To learn and understand the importance of automation in manufacturing

Course Outcomes

CO1: Knowledge will be gained on the subject matter. <br />CO2: Able to apply the theory to practical problems. <br />CO3: Knowledge will be enhanced to implement the concept for product development.
