Syllabus

Introduction to Polymers and Composites, Fabrication of polymer test specimen using injection moulding technique, Tensile testing of polymer specimen fabricated in the laboratory using Universal testing machine, Thermal analysis of Polypropylene and Polyethylene terephthalate using Differential scanning calorimeter, Effect of curing on the glass transition temperature of a thermosetting polymer, Fabrication of glass fiber reinforced epoxy laminates using hand lay-up technique, Evaluation of flexural properties of the GE composites, Determination of density and volume fraction of the constituents in a glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite, Fabrication of pure Cu and Cu-Al2O3 metal matrix composites and determination of their green and sintered densities, Hardness measurement and microstructure analysis of pure Cu and Cu-Al2O3 composites.

Course Objectives

  • To familiarize students with the basics of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers and their behaviour
  • To make students understand different types of composites and their applications
  • Fabrication of various composites and their characterization techniques

Course Outcomes

1. An understanding on various types of Engineering Polymers. <br />2. Tensile behavior study of thermoplastic polymers. <br />3. Use of Differential Scanning Calorimetry for analyzing various phase transformations in commonly used polymers and polymer composites. <br />4. Hands-on experience on Fabrication of Polymer matrix and metal matrix composites. <br />5. Determining the reinforcement content in a polymer composite and analyzing its effects on the overall performance of the composites. <br />6. Understanding the Mechanical behavior of various composites.
