BASIC INFORMATION

  • Make & Model : Leica DM2700P
  • Department : Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
  • Location : Dept. of Earth & Atmospheric sciences
  • Category : Category - III
  • Status : Functional

PRINCIPLE:

The Leica DM2700P operates on the principle of polarization microscopy, using polarized light to study the optical properties of materials. The sample is illuminated with polarized light, and the interaction of the light with the mineral or material reveals information about its optical properties, such as birefringence, pleochroism, and refractive indices. By rotating the sample under the objective lenses, interference patterns (such as interference figures) are observed, providing data on crystal structures and material characteristics.

APPLICATION:

Petrology and Geology: Ideal for analyzing rock thin sections and minerals to understand their crystallographic structure, mineral composition, and optical properties. Material Science: Used for examining polymers, thin films, and other birefringent materials. Education: Often used in academic settings to teach students about optical properties and mineral identification. Forensic Analysis: Useful in studying the composition of minerals in criminal investigations, especially in geologically rich areas
