BASIC INFORMATION

  • Make & Model : James Cox & Sons, USA
  • Department : Civil Engineering
  • Location : Highway lab
  • Category : Category - III
  • Status : Functional

PRINCIPLE:

The Rolling Thin-Film Oven (RTFO) procedure provides simulated short term aged bituminous binder as exposed to elevated temperatures to simulate the aging by plant mixing and construction. The RTFO test measures the effect of heat and air on a moving film of semi-solid asphalt binder. The binder is placed in a rotating carriage within an oven, and the aging process is simulated by maintaining a constant temperature (typically 163°C or 325°F) for a specified duration (usually 85 minutes)

APPLICATION:

To assess the short term aging affect of bituminous binder. The RTFO test is used to determine the short-term aging characteristics of asphalt binders. It helps in predicting how the binder will perform during the mixing and laying process in hot-mix asphalt production1. The results are used to adjust the binder formulation to ensure durability and performance.
