Abstract:
The Manak Pravardhak Programme, a two-day workshop held at NITS Noida, convened experts from academia (including IITs and NITs), industry, and research laboratories to delve into the standardisation process. The primary focus was on how India can transition from being a standard follower to a standard maker. Representatives from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) discussed their ongoing collaborative programs, highlighting the involvement of young professionals in the standardization. This workshop provided a valuable opportunity to understand the multifaceted steps involved in standardisation, from national to international levels, emphasising the importance of consensus among countries. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which represents India in international forums such as ISO and IEC, highlighted its role in ensuring Indian interests are considered in the development of international standards. In response to rapid technological innovations, BIS aims to engage individuals and organisations with the requisite expertise, especially in nodal institutes, including NIT Rourkela. Held on March 27-28, 2024, the program aimed to encourage the participation of Indian young professionals under 35 in the standardisation process. Topics covered included the benefits of participating in standardisation, the procedures of BIS, ISO, and IEC, and involvement in their activities. The workshop also addressed research projects and emerging topics such as smart technologies and sustainability. Resource persons from ISO and IEC provided guidelines to equip young professionals to serve effectively as technical committee members.
