Abstract:
Reinforced concrete (RC) structures need to be strengthened or retrofitted because of material deterioration or to restore the strength that structural members have lost as a consequence of mishaps or natural disasters like earthquakes etc. Different strengthening techniques such as externally bonded (EB), near surface mounted (NSM) are utilized in the literature to strengthen RC structures. But, a major drawback of the above-mentioned techniques is that they increase the strength at the cost of ductility. The side near surface mounted (SNSM) technique has emerged which exhibited improvement in strength and its ductility is better than the other techniques. In this study, an effort is being made to strengthen RC beams by carrying out numerical simulation in ABACUS by SNSM technique and to study the effect of varying groove size by considering a constant diameter of the FRP bar. A perfect bond model is used to analyze the behavior between the concrete and epoxy interface as well as between the FRP and epoxy interface in this study. The results from the present study are validated with the results available in the literature and the optimum size of the groove is calculated by using the present numerical model.
