Over the last decade, urbanization and industrialization has contaminated water resources, dairy industry is among the most water consuming industry. A million litres of dairy wastewater are generated daily during processing of dairy product. Dairy wastewater originating during processing of dairy products in dairy industry is one of the highest wastewater generating industry as well as contains organics, nutrients, fatty acids, protein and total solids etc. In view of this problem, dairy wastewater was collected and characterized to identify the toxic level and its problematic concern. Organics, nutrients and solids were selected as target pollutant whose remediation have been considered in various phases of this research work. Hydroponic rhizofiltration using Portulaca oleracea and Coleus scutellarioides with aeration were investigated in lab scale set up and all proved successful in remediation of organics, solids and nutrients from dairy wastewater. Also, the study investigated the removal of organics, nutrients and total solids from dairy wastewater using macrophyte assisted integrated vermifiltration with hydroponic system.
