BIOGRAPHY

Roshmi Sen is working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Planning and Architecture at NIT Rourkela since 2018. Roshmi was awarded PhD in 2021 from IIT Kharagpur. Her doctoral research work evaluated mass housing building envelopes in a multi-objective optimization framework interconnecting areas of Housing and Community Planning with Building Science research. She was awarded the Fulbright-Nehru doctoral research fellowship (2016-17) which provided her with an opportunity to work as a research intern with C.H.A.O.S lab at the Andlinger Center for Energy and Environment, Princeton University where she observed how a building science lab operates. During this research internship, she was introduced to the area of “low-exergy cooling in tropics”. Previously, she has worked with urban housing poverty issues. Her Master in City Planning dissertation submitted in 2011 was related to the development of a “slum upgrading toolkit” considering Kolkata as case study. Also, with her post-graduation dissertation as a background study, she along with her co-inventor patented and prototyped a kinetic bunk-bed cum work-space arrangement to address the problem of space crisis in mixed use living conditions as found in urban slum areas. She is currently working towards technology transfer of this product. Before her doctoral degree, she has worked with a renowned Architectural Firm named M/s Haven Architects and has handled big projects as Urban Planner and Architect. She is eager to mentor research students in designing systems and prototyping products that would help mitigate global problems of energy and inequality.
