Unit 1: Conceptual Architecture: Society, Culture, Social Institutions, Status and Role Types and Features of Society, Types of Culture, Types and Functions of Social Institutions, AGIL Model.
Unit 2: Structure and Composition of Indian Society: Unity and Diversity in India: Geo-political Factors, Caste, Class, Tribes, Dalits, Race, Ethnicity, Religion, Linguistic Groups, Regionslism, Communalism, Secularism
Unit 3: Kinship, Marriage and Family: Dimensions and Significance of Kinship, Kinship Groups, Family and Marriage: Type, Function and Significance, Rules of Marriage, Indian Joint Family Changing Patterns of Marriage and Family
Unit 4: Socio-spatial Structure: Rural, Rurality and Village Urban Areas, Towns and Cities Rural-Urban Contrast and Continuum. Urbanisation Rural and Urban Development Policies and Programmes
Unit 5: Social Change and Development: Perspectives on Social Change – Evolutionary, Conflict, Cyclical and Functional Processes of Change: Industrialization, Westernization Sanskritization Modernization Globalisation.
Course Objectives
- This course enables the students to get familiarized with basic concepts and debates in the study of society and culture with special reference to India.
- It seeks to provide a basic understanding of and insights into different aspects and issues in the study of Indian society and culture.
Course Outcomes
After attending the course, students will develop conceptual and operational understanding in the study of society and culture with special reference to India. The course will enable students to have critical and policy insights into different aspects and issues in the study of Indian society and culture and equip them as social engineers.
