Syllabus

An introductory undergraduate/graduate level course to nanomaterials chemistry for students interested in the nature, preparation, characterization, and properties of crystalline inorganic solids in bulk, thin film, and nanoscale form. Emphasis is on a chemistry approach to periodic solids, beginning with a survey of descriptive crystal chemistry, bonding, and structure-property relationships. Students will learn common preparation methods, the characterization of solids by diffraction, and classical and quantum models of electronic structure. Later on, basic concepts of nanochemistry along with their synthesis methods (top-down and bottom-up) will be discussed. Major tools such as SEM, TEM, EDS, AFM, gas adsorption, etc used to characterize nanomaterials will be presented. Unique properties of nanomaterials such as chemical, optical, magnetic, electrical and mechanical properties will be briefly taught.

Course Objectives

 • To have in-depth understanding of a new topics of nanoscience and
nanotechnology.

Course Outcomes

The students will gain detailed information about various synthesis protocols, characterization tools and
industrial applications of nanomaterials.
