Syllabus

Module I - Introduction to the basics of planning concepts:
Understanding urban areas, definition of urban area, Census classification of urban settlement, urban-rural continuum, urbanisation, urbanism, role of planners, understanding regions and types of regions, approaches to planning.
Tutorial – Collection and representation of time series and cross-sectional data

Module II - Classification and hierarchy of settlement:
Classification of urban settlements based on different criteria, metropolitan concept, concept of primacy, primate cities, Zipf’s Rank Size Rule hierarchy of settlement
Tutorial – Experiment in Zipf’s Rank Size Rule

Module III - Land use and Zoning:
Land-use, zoning, development control land use theories – Concentric zone theory, Sector theory, Multiple nuclei theory, and others, National Land Utilisation Policy, land reforms in India, zoning and land use classification
Tutorial – Land use comparison of cities

Module IV - Urban Infrastructure:
Housing: definitions related to housing, housing policies in India, traffic and transportation, social Infrastructure, physical infrastructure, population projection
Tutorial – Calculation of social and physical infrastructure, basic population projection

Module IV - Emerging concepts in planning:
Neighbourhood planning, sustainable development goals, green urbanism, inclusive city transit-oriented development, smart cities.

Module V - Data in planning process
Types of data and data collection, sampling techniques, central tendency, Pearson correlation

Course Objectives

  • To introduce planning as a discipline for organization of human habitat.
