Syllabus
Definition and concepts: Conservation, preservation, restoration, reconstruction and adaptation.
Ethics and principles of conservation. History of Modern conservation movement, International framework of conservation: Venice charter, Burra charter.
Assessment of value linked with heritage buildings. Traditional building materials, causes of decay and deterioration. Environmental influences in decay of structures. Conventional remedies to decay of building elements.
World heritage sites: Listing and grading of heritage structures.
Investigation, documentation and analysis of historic structures and sites including field study (3 days).
Students have to prepare report and deliver presentation on conservation of identified architecture, sites, urban pockets, towns and cultures.
Course Objectives
- To identify, formulate and solve problems in historic buildings and prevent them from further deterioration.
