Syllabus

Image transforms: Discrete Fourier transform, displaying of magnitude and phase of Fourier Transform, , Interchanging of phases of two images, Discrete cosine transform, DCT energy compaction, Comparison of DCT and DFT, Discrete sine transform, Hadamard Transform, Haar transform, Slant transform, Walsh transform, KL transform.
Image enhancement in spatial domain: Point processing, local enhancement, multi-image operation, neighboured processing.
Image enhancement in the frequency domain: Shifting the center of the spectrum, smoothning filters, sharpening filters, unsharp masking, high boost filtering, notch filtering, homomorphic filtering
Image restoration: Image denoising, periodic noise, image denoising in spatial domain, periodic noise reduction, estimation of degradation function, deblurring, constrained least square filtering, geometric transformation.
Image compression: Lossless compression and lossy compression.
Image segmentation: Edge segmentation, threshold based segmentation, region based segmentation, clustering techniques, segmentation using watershed algorithm.

Course Objectives

  • The students will familiarize themselves with the Matlab and LabView software
  • The students will be able to implement and analyze different transforms on medical images
  • The students will be able to apply their knowledge on digital image processing for processing medical images

Course Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students will be able to: <br />1. perform basic image processing-related operations <br />2. gain an understanding of practical aspects of image processing <br />3. gain an understanding of practical aspects of image analysis <br />4. acquire images using imaging tools <br />5. apply their knowledge in processing and analyzing images of biomedical importance
