General characteristics of polluted water and their permissible limits Methods adopted in its treatment Activated sludge process equipment,advantages and disadvantages, factors affecting Activated sludge Process and numerical Trickling bed filter and their classifications, advantages and disadvantages, numerical related to standard rate and high rate trickling filters Roles of bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Nitrification and De-Nitrification,Biogas production: Its mechanism and influencing factors, Sludge disposal methods: Anaerobic processes. Sludge digestion (contact digester), Bioleaching and its mechanisms bioremediation : In-situ and ex-situ methods Biosorption Phytoremediation Biological Hydrogen production.Types of bioreactors.

Course Objectives

  • This course applies biochemical and microbial principles in the use of microbial systems to minimize or remediate environmental problems.
  • It provides a basic concept to design and select a bioreactor.
  • It inculcates the basis for application of biological tools in environmental management.

Course Outcomes

The course is intended to provide students with the following benefits: <br />1. To understand different mechanisms involved in waste water treatment <br />2. To understand various biological treatment processes in soil and solid waste management <br />3. To design an advanced biological treatment process for solid and waste water management.
