Abstract:

MSMEs do not operate in isolation. Their growth relies on social linkages with other organizations and individuals which include moral support, knowledge sharing, access to distribution channels, and other factors, together forming entrepreneurial networks, which work collectively towards an economic goal. Existing empirical findings indicate centrality of social ties and level of embeddedness, at every stage of entrepreneurial process. Entrepreneurial networks play a pivotal role in accessing resources, fostering innovation and mitigating uncertainty. Thus, locational circumstances determine the strength of ties and spatial context significantly contributes to the growth patterns of entrepreneurial clusters. Till date researches have disproportionately focused on consequences of such networks particularly in case of urban India. Accordingly, the present research investigates &ndash (i) How do spatial factors regulate social ties? (ii) How do socio-spatial linkages contribute in establishing healthy and strong enterprises? This research explores spatio-temporal dynamics of entrepreneurial clusters, in different urban and peri-urban locations in India. The present study has further identified location specific forces, spatial dynamics of gains and losses. A pilot study indicates that spatial attributes influence the growth of clusters. The results suggest formulation of cluster specific strategic planning mechanisms to influence spatial configuration of the entrepreneurial clusters for effective socio-economic development.
