Syllabus

1. Power Semiconductor Devices: power diodes, power transistors, SCRs, TRIAC, GTO, power MOSFETs, IGBTs-Principles of operation, characteristics, ratings, protection and gate drive circuits, dv / dt and di / dt protection, Series and parallel operation of Thyristors.
2. Controlled rectifiers: Single phase and Three-phase, Effect of Source Inductance, Power factor improvement, Dual converter.
3. DC-DC converters: Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost converters with circuit configuration and analysis. Introduction to Zero Voltage Switching and Zero Current Switching.
4. DC-AC converters: Single phase and Three phase Voltage Source (VSI) and Current Source Inverter (CSI), frequency and voltage control Pulse Width Modulation Techniques (PWM). Introduction to Multilevel Inverter.
5. AC-AC converter: Single and Three phase controllers, phase control, PWM AC voltage controller, Principle of ON-OFF control and Cyclo-converters.

Course Objectives

  1. To study the characteristics and operation of the various semiconductor devices.
  2. To analysis different power electronic converters.
  3. To learn the practical application of the different type of converters
  4. To learn the practical application of the different type of converters

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of the course
1. The student will be able to understand the principle of operation of commonly employed power electronic converters.
2. The student will be capable of analyzing non -linear circuits with several power electronic switches.
3. The student will be equipped to take up advanced courses in Power Electronics and its application areas.
