Introduction: Properties of structural steel, Indian standard specifications and sections
Design approach: Analysis procedures & design philosophy, introduction to Limit State Design
Connections: Riveted, Bolted and welded connections
Design of tension members: Types of tension members, design of tension members, Lug angles
Design of compression members: Types of compression members, Design of axially loaded compression members, Built-up columns, Lacing, Batten
Column bases: Design of solid slab base, Design of gusseted base
Design of Beams: Behaviour of steel beams, section classification, web buckling and crippling, deflection, design procedure of rolled beams, design of purlins.
Plate Girder: Elements of Plate girder, proportioning of web and flanges, flexural strength, shear strength of web, Design of stiffeners

Course Objectives

  1. Students will learn to design riveted, bolted and welded connections.
  2. Students will learn to design different structural members used in steel structures.

Course Outcomes

Students will be able to design the riveted, bolted and welded joints.
Students will be able to design tension members, compression members.
Students will be able to design beams and plate girders.
