Single Phase Transformer: Review of EMF equation and equivalent circuit, phasor diagrams on lo load and full load, per-unit representation of transformer parameters, voltage regulation, losses and efficiency, OC and SC test, all day efficiency, parallel operation of transformers. Three Phase Transformer: Construction of various types, operating characteristics of star–star, star–delta, delta – star, delta – delta, open – delta connections, vector groups.D.C. Motor: Review of EMF and torque equations, classification, losses and efficiency, Swinburne’s test & Hopkinson’s test, torque /speed characteristics and speed control of shunt and series motors. Induction Machine: Three phase induction motor: Construction and principle of operation, equivalent circuit and phasor diagram, torque-slip characteristics, no load and blocked rotor test, starting and speed control.
Single phase induction motor: Principle of operation, torque-slip characteristics, starting methods. Synchronous Machines: Constructional features, synchronous generators and motors, equivalent circuit and phasor diagram, power and torque characteristics, voltage regulation of non-salient pole alternators by synchronous impedance method, V-curve and inverted-V curve, starting of synchronous motors.

Course Objectives

  1. Introduce students to various types of electric machines available.
  2. To prepare the students to have knowledge of three phase transformers.
  3. Introduce students to the operating principles, methods of starting and area of applications of synchronous and induction machines.

Course Outcomes

1.Apply principles of electromechanical energy conversion in electrical machines
2.Identify different types of synchronous and induction machines and know the working principle
3.Basic calculation on synchronous and induction performance
4.Understand areas of application of synchronous and induction machines
