Measurement of Electrical Quantities, Standards of Measurement & Errors, Voltmeter, Ammeter, Wattmeter, and Energy meter. Measurement of Electrical Elements: Measurement of low, medium and high resistances, insulation resistance measurement, AC bridges for inductance and capacitance measurement. Instrument Transformers: Current and Potential transformers, ratio and phase angle errors. Electronic Measurements: Electronic voltmeter, multimeter, wattmeter & energy meter. Time, Frequency and phase angle measurements using CRO Spectrum & Wave analyzer. Digital counter, frequency meter, voltmeter, multimeter, and storage oscilloscope. Instrumentation: Transducers, classification & selection of transducers, strain gauges, inductive & capacitive transducers, piezoelectric and Hall-effect transducers, thermistor, thermocouple, photo-diodes & photo-transistors, encoder type digital transducers, Signal conditioning and telemetry, basic concepts of smart sensors and applications. Data Acquisition Systems.

Course Objectives

  1. Comprehend the standards of measurements, errors and methods to reduce them.
  2. Understand the constructional details and principle of operation of basic analog and digital measuring instruments.
  3. To understand the working and applications of various transducers and data acquisition devices.

Course Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able to

1 Take necessary precautions while using measuring instruments and represent measured quantities indicating proper uncertainty.
2 Choose a proper transducer based on their characteristics for measurement of different parameters.
3 Apply his/her knowledge of data acquisition to perform PC based measurements
