AT NIT ROURKELA
Thrust has changed from an under-graduate college to composite under-graduate, post-graduate technical university.
Focus has changed from impartation of shop floor skills to innovation, research and development of new technology.
 
We ADHERE TO FOLLOWING PRACTICES
 
A. Academic
1. Flexibility in all UG and PG programs: Introduction of wide range of elective papers including interdisciplinary subjects in syllabi.
2.
Continuous Evaluation System of Students: Regular class tests, assignments, mid-term examinations, term papers, quizzes and laboratory tests.
3.
Introduction of Credit (SGPA/CGPA) system.
4.
Revised Courses of Studies of B.Tech., M.Tech., M.Tech.(Res) and M.Sc. Programs with large number of modern subjects and industry-oriented papers. The institute has decided to revise the syllabi on a regular basis.
5.
Introduction of new M.Tech. (Res) Program in Engineering and Science Departments since 2004-05.
6.
Introduction of online course feedback system and implementation of corrective mechanism.
7.
Introduction of Course Appraisal system and appropriate follow-up action.
8.
Transparent and hassle free rechecking of papers and alternation of grades, if applicable.
9.
Publication of results within 15 days of examination.
10.
Emphasis on topics of current interest in the academic program and project based learning instead of the traditional subjects and examination centric pedagogy.

Innovations in academic program
  (i) Creation of an ambiance of academic excellence that is conducive to growth of innovative research and support to industry

Offering fellowship to all Ph.D. students (Engineering, Science and Humanities) which has attracted some of brightest and most motivated young men and women.

M.Tech. programs supported with fellowship in both Engineering and Basic Science streams.

The institute continues to add research fellowship every year through both direct and project funding till the research student population becomes comparable to that in major technical universities around the world. Fellowship is offered to all M.Tech. (Res) students who are not employed under ongoing research projects.

Almost all our engineering departments are now eligible to admit students to Ph.D. and M.Tech. programs under QIP from the admission year 2008-09.
16.
Introduction of slow-pace M.Sc. and M.Tech. programs as a subset of regular programs for employees of nearby academic institution and industries.
17.
The B.Tech. program strengthened by introduction of greater emphasis on project work and continuous monitoring.
18.
Encouragement of creative project work in under-graduate, post-graduate and research programs. This has resulted in creating opportunities of marketable intellectual property. The BOG has approved an intellectual property policy for the institute.
19.
A large number of new and sophisticated equipment and technical software have been added to our laboratories and computer centre to improve and strengthen the quality of education.
20.
Students are permitted to sit for campus selection to dream and super dream job.
21.
All post graduate and research students are given sitting space in the department, and permission to issue building keys on 7 x 24 basis.
22.
All research students (Ph.D. and M.Tech. (R)) given individual PCs.
B. Managerial and Administrative
1. A SRICCE (Sponsored Research, Industrial Consultancy & Continuing Education) Cell has been created with a full time Dean to enhance and strengthen sponsored research, consultancy and continuing education.

Academic calendar exists and is adhered to

Friendly management system between staff and students.
4.
Two faculty members are elected as members of BOG to take part in the decision and policy making of the institute.
5.
Deans, HODs, HOCs, PICs, HOOs are delegated with administrative and financial powers.
6.
Computerized monitoring of attendance, personalized progress monitoring, counseling through departmental faculty advisors, have been introduced. This has made students more responsible, leading to significant drop in failures and delay in completion.

Online fee payment system introduced.

The institute is working towards creating intellectual property to provide technological independence to our country in the world arena.

The institute has initiated generating human capital to sustain and enhance creative process.
C. Financial
1. Decentralized budget and accounts covering all departments and facilities of the Institute.
2.
Transparent and formalized purchase and works procedure.
3.
Total involvement of departmental faculty in decision making in purchase matters.
4.
Major financial decisions by finance committee which is a sub-committee of the Board of Governors.
5.
Decentralized financial powers – up to 25,000 for HODs and up to 50,000 for Deans and with no limit for Director.
6.
All construction and maintenance work administered by committees of faculty and officers, and supervised by Building & Works Committee consisting of internal and external experts.
7.
Provision for payment of interest on delayed payment of bills, if any.
8.
Principal Investigators of projects given power of HOD for respective projects.
D. Faculty
1. Provision for incentives to teachers
  (i) Payment of 100% membership fee for one learned society
  (ii) Annual Book grant of Rs. 4,000/-
  (iii) Telephone facility at office and home with STD facility [Institute pays up to 500 units of calls per month]

3.
Package to attract and retain good quality faculty: Newly appointed faculty are provided with research funding up to Rs 2.00 L through Initial Faculty Research Project (IFRP) to initiate research work
4.
Full financial support is provided to faculty for attending an international conference abroad once in 3 years
5.
Complete support is provided to faculty for attending conferences, workshops, and seminars in India.
6.
The institute facilitates faculty career growth and encourages conducting continuing and short-term programs.
7.
Institute sends faculty abroad for undergoing specialized training. Faculties are given full financial support for 15 days to undertake training in advanced research laboratories in India and abroad.
8.
Job function of faculty and staff has been redefined in terms of creative work rather than dissemination of existing knowledge.
9.
Various measures have been initiated for substantial change in outlook of faculty, staff and students.
10.
The institute has taken up proactive steps to make faculty, students and technicians conscious of the value of their intellectual property and ways of safeguarding it.

To foster interaction among scientists and engineers to increase visibility of the institute among its scientific peers, regular conferences, seminars and workshops are held in all departments.
E. Student
1. Participation of students in the senate is under consideration.
2. Students are allowed to undergo summer internship to best institutes and research laboratories in the country and outside.
3. Many M.Tech. students carry out their one-year final thesis work on industry related problems with joint supervision of institute Professor and industry professionals.
4.
Various measures have been initiated for substantial change in outlook of faculty, staff and students.
5.
The institute has taken up proactive steps to make faculty, students and technicians conscious of the value of their intellectual property and ways of safeguarding it.
6.
For all round development of personality of students excellent sports and cultural activities are regularly held and participation of students are encouraged.
7.
The Student Activity Centre (SAC) coordinates the students activities through the technical society, the games and sports society, the literary and cultural society and the film and music society.
8.
The SAC supports, self driven students initiatives in the form of technical, cultural, sports clubs and associations.
9.
The technical society of SAC coordinates the annual national student symposium “CONFLUENCE” every year. Students from institutes across the country participate in the seminars, technical games and in model and software contests.

Participations of students in various cultural programs at national level are encouraged and supported
11.
The students are encouraged to publish several newsletters and magazines that have high cultural and journalistic value. The latest in the series is a weekly electronic newsletter named “Monday Morning” which brings information about the Institute to every desktop when all start the week.

Adequate in-campus accommodation for all categories of students:
  (i) Four hundred-seater new Boys hostel is fully operational. A new thousand seater hostel is going to be built.
  (ii) The institute has created a hostel for married student which has boosted enrolment in our research programs.
13.
Almost complete elimination of ragging through enhancement of self esteem of students.
14.
Medical insurance including 100% reimbursement in most cases for all students.
15.
Insurance against theft of pedal bicycle (any time) and baggage during travel to home on vacation.
16.
Emphasis on 100% attendance in all courses.
17.
Work is in progress on construction of a new swimming pool and renovation of student activity centre.
18.
A new major campus extension including a new lecture hall-cum-computer centre complex and four modern buildings for departments are in active progress.

The alumni are playing a major role in building the positive image of the institute in India and abroad. The Alumni Association NITRAA has established strong links between its members through electronic media. The electronic newsletter of the association facilitates communication among alumni distributed around the globe and sharing of nostalgic thoughts.
20.
The alumni are presently working towards becoming a major source of financial and technical resources for future generation of quality students.
F. Supporting Staff & Officers
1. Job function of faculty and staff has been redefined in terms of creative work rather than dissemination of existing knowledge.

Various measures have been initiated for substantial change in outlook of faculty, staff and students.
3.
Need based training for Officers and supporting staff are arranged in the institute and outside on a regular basis.
4.
Incentive plan has been prepared for Technical supporting staff.
5.
Completely Merit based recruitment and promotion through well organized recruitment process.
6.
NIT Rourkela Initiative for Technical Excellence (NITRITE) – a scheme for creative work by technicians with provision for financial support and recognition through cash prize.
G. Institute Ambience
1. High bandwidth (16 MBPS) internet connectivity is provided in each class room and laboratories along with provision of LCD projector. Adequate reprographic facilities have been created in each department.
2.
All faculty are free on Wednesday morning. Either the HOD or Departmental faculty meeting is regularly held to discuss various problems of the institute and departments.
3.
All computing and laboratory infrastructure are open round the clock depending upon the need of the students. Central storage and high speed computing facility is provided to the academic community. Internet connectivity has been provided to all rooms of the hostels and faculty quarters of the campus.
4.
Uninterrupted high bandwidth internet facility is provided to everyone in the campus.
5.
To provide a conducive academic environment, the entire institute campus has been renovated with regard to buildings, roads, utilities, security, cleanliness and hygienic by the constant supervision, up-gradation and development efforts put in by the entire campus community.
6.
The academic campus now has green lawns, gardens and flowers and has all the amenities for developing superior personal, social and academic skills.
7.
The campus community has strived to inculcate the spirit of team work among the students, faculty, staff and their faculty members to create a cultural bond among all.
8.
The NIT mini-township has its own water supply system. To overcome the power shortage, new transformers have been installed, and overhead lines are substituted by underground cables. The state electric authorities have been approached for improving the quality of power supplied. The campus and student hostels have been better illuminated.
9.
New campus for faculty housing, renovation of all existing staff quarters, new drinking water supply system to both academic and residential campuses, a new integrated sewerage system, extension of academic building, lighting of sports complex, a new captive 33KV/11KV sub-station have been planned and are in the process of execution.
10.
The institute’s well-furnished and an esthetically designed guest house is an attraction for the visitors. The Visitors’ House also provides comfortable stay with improved boarding and lodging facilities. This has enhanced better academic interaction with our distinguished guests.
